Brain tumor warning signs: what your body is trying to tell you

Brain tumors do not always announce themselves with dramatic symptoms. Some of the most important signs are gradual and easy to mistake for other causes.

We tend to imagine that a brain tumor causes immediate, severe symptoms. In reality, many develop slowly, with signs that for weeks or months are mistaken for minor problems.

What symptoms can a brain tumor cause?

They depend on its location, size and how fast it grows, because each region of the brain has different functions. No single picture applies to everyone, but these signs always deserve an evaluation:

  • A new headache, or one that gets worse over time.
  • Seizures in an adult with no history of epilepsy.
  • Changes in memory, speech, behavior or personality.
  • Weakness, loss of sensation or vision problems on one side.
  • Nausea or vomiting with no apparent cause.

When is a headache worrying?

Most headaches are benign. It is more worrying when it is new in someone who did not have them, gets worse over days or weeks, is stronger on waking or when straining, or comes with other neurological symptoms.

Why can a tumor cause seizures?

Because it irritates the brain tissue and generates abnormal electrical activity, which shows up as seizures, involuntary movements or brief episodes of confusion. A first seizure in an adult should always be investigated.

Which changes in behavior or memory can be a sign?

Trouble finding words, recent forgetfulness, changes in behavior, poorer concentration or impaired judgment. They are usually related to lesions in the frontal or temporal lobes.

Which symptoms need an urgent evaluation?

Weakness that progresses in an arm or a leg, vision changes, trouble speaking or loss of sensation on one side of the body. Vomiting with a headache and neurological symptoms can mean increased pressure inside the skull.

Do these symptoms mean there is a tumor?

Not necessarily. Many other conditions cause similar symptoms. A medical evaluation is the only way to rule out serious causes and reach the right diagnosis.

Which study is done?

A brain MRI with contrast is the most complete study. It allows the diagnosis to start in time and, if there is a lesion, to define its type and the best plan for each patient.

In summary

A new neurological symptom that persists or gets worse should not wait. Detecting it in time changes the outlook.
